When I was 20 years old, I suffered from eczema all over my neck and my arms with no explanation. Scratching, itching, and dry skin was my life. Hydrocortisone creams helped, but it was temporary. Eczema would almost always return and I stopped the application of the creams when I learned it was damaging my body every day over time, particularly my liver. Fortuitously, I met a holistic chiropractor who performed some muscle testing maneuvers on me and told me I needed to take a food supplement called Thymex from Standard Process Labs for 12 weeks due to a challenged immune system, most probably bacteria-related, like a staph infection. I followed his recommendation enthusiastically and within 4 weeks, I began to see my skin healing. What a relief and what a miracle! My mind was expanded. Could the body actually heal itself naturally with the right nutrients? Wow!

Years later, I would experience another miracle, furthering my new convictions. My wife was diagnosed with endometriosis, a chronic estrogen-dependent disease where tissues similar to the lining of her uterus grew outside of her uterus, causing severe pelvic pain and infertility. After laparoscopy, a minor, minimally invasive surgical procedure, she was told she wouldn’t be having children anymore and would need to be on hormone replacement medications for the rest of her life at 35 years old! Unwilling to accept this prognosis, my wife declined and began a recommended program of nutritional therapy, even after being told by the nurses that she could die without the medications. Within a year, she was pregnant and we had Mark, our miracle baby! Again, I witnessed the power of the body to heal naturally and perform without any interference.

Finally, after a family relocation from northern to southern CA, opening a new chiropractic practice again, and the business overhead stress that’s often involved, my wife had a ruptured appendix and nearly died if she hadn’t had the medical care she had at just the right time. What did I learn from this experience? I’m so glad that for emergency care! There’s a place for it in medicine. But most of the time we don’t need to treat our bodies like an emergency all the time unless we’ve allowed our bodies to go too far!

Time is a precious resource and we never know what kind of catastophies comes our way to steal our time. We aren’t promised a long life either, but we could do our best with the life and time we do have. How much is our health worth? It’s worth every dollar I believe, if we want the quality of life that we want now and later. Our health is truly an investment, not an expense, and if we don’t invest in our health now, we can be sure we’ll have to pay for it someday and somehow later.
The three pillars of health are structure, chemistry, and emotional/spiritual. When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, strength cannot fight, intelligence cannot be applied, art cannot become manifest, and wealth becomes useless. The body maintains an inborn ability to self-regulate and maintain health. Nature needs no help, just no interference. So let thy food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food (Hippocrates in 400 BC). The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well. Chiropractic releases this natural healing force.
